It holds some similarities due to the source material, but contains numerous differences that will be odd to people who are more familiar with it and media that more closely leans on its interpretation of Digimon. Meaning that at the time, the anime didn't really exist, and this game has little to do with it. Remember that marketing push I mentioned just now? The Digimon Adventure anime that most people are familiar with was also part of it. The first point of interest about this game was the timeframe it was made in. How's that for presumptuous? This is something that makes sense if you've played both games, as they are completely different and have little in common both were probably made in isolation by separate teams, if I had to guess. All we really know was that it was part of a huge marketing push in order for Bandai to compete with Game Freak and Pokemon in fact, this game and its sequel were both announced at the same time, if you can believe it. There isn't a whole lot of information available about the development of this game, or at least nothing that's been translated into english that I could find. It ocurred to me that a few days ago marked the 19th anniversary of this game's release in North America, and it had its 20th birthday in January, since it was released in 1999 in Japan.
